CREATING A LEGACY

Oral history is not as prevalent as it had been in the past.  It is my goal to determine current practices and methods by which African American men are passing on the history and legacy for their family.
For example, if you have written and published a book, please let me know the links and details.
If you are writing a legacy will, please attach a copy. I will update this blog on Monday of each week.
If you are an artist and have drawn or painted photos, please advise.

The following has been taken from a posting by J. Otis Ledbetter and Kurt Bruner in a Focus on the Family article.

QUESTION FOR TODAY

Building Relationships
No matter who we are, where we live, or what our goals may be, we all have one thing in common: a heritage. That is, a social, emotional and/or spiritual legacy passed on from parent to child. Every one of us is passed a heritage, lives out a heritage, and gives a heritage to our family. It's not an option. Parents always pass to their children a legacy … good, bad or some of both.

QUESTION FOR TODAY

What action(s) are you taking to identify the spiritual, emotional, heritage you have been given and how this can be passed on to your progeny?

I wrote poems over a forty year period to all family members.

    The Emotional Legacy

In order to prosper, our children need an enduring sense of security and stability nurtured in an environment of safety and love. Each family may define this in different terms.
In what way(s) were you given a sense of security and nurture during your formative years from birth to age 10?

How are you providing a sense of security to your children or young relatives if you are not yet a parent.

I will make a summary of the feedback periodically.

    QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.”

  4. Secondly in my personal experiences. While a sixth grade student, a teacher asked me “Are you a fool?” Clearly I was not. A great academic student who had become “impudent” and careless of my still young integrity. The shock served to “realign” my attitude and behavior. Both of which were taught at home by my devoted parents.

It’s not easy being “green” as a popular frog puppet has stated. It’s also not easy being an African American male in America. The masks common to everyone takes on different hues and colors based upon the leadership and culture. Avoiding emotional traps or ambushes created to demean your character or intelligence requires vigilance. This African American teacher had given me the “jolt”
I needed to continue my development for my future. I am forever greatful for God having placed her in my path. The corporate world of 3M, Pfizer, etc. was more demanding un discerning the “words between the lines”. Wow! What’s a blog? I believe I have just written one.
